Don't Be In The Dark About Our Legal System

Hello, I'm Karla Mitchell. Going through a legal case can be very expensive and challenging. I won't go into details, but I recently underwent my own legal battle that lasted several years. It is finally over and I successfully received a settlement, but I had to spend so much time studying law in order to play my role in my own court case. While I found a great attorney at one point, I felt completely lost initially and I don't want anyone else to experience the same thing. So I decided to create this blog for those who would like to know more about law.

Common Injuries That Plague Retail Salespeople

by Andrew Martin

Over four million people work as retail salespersons in the country. While the job may seem safe on the surface, it does have its risks. Here are some of the common injuries faced by retail salespeople:

Back Injuries

Back injuries are common to salespeople who engage in the heavy lifting of boxes and other items. Such injuries occur when people don't use proper lifting techniques or try to lift items that are too heavy to be handled by one person. Here are some tips for avoiding such injuries:

  • Minimize lifting by using other methods of moving items; for example, you can roll or push them
  • Bending the knees and keeping the back straight while lifting
  • Not twisting while lifting
  • Wearing shoes with good grips
  • Using equipment, such as dollies, for heavy items

Repetitive Stress Injuries

The phrase "repetitive stress injury" (RSI) applies to all injuries caused by excessive repetitive movements of parts of the body. The injury occurs because of the cumulative forces of the movements on your tendons and tissues. For example, if you are always lifting items with your left hand from one place to another, the joints in the left hand may develop RSI after some time.

Note that you don't have to be using a lot of force to develop RSI; mere repetitions are enough. This is why RSI develop after repeating the same task for a long time that can range from weeks to months. Here are a few ways retail salespeople can avoid RSI:

  • Adopt appropriate posture at work
  • If possible, mix up your work routines so you don't have to repeat the same movements endlessly
  • Take frequent breaks whenever possible
  • Eat well and exercise

Cuts and Bruises

Lastly, many retail salespeople also experience cuts and bruises over the course of their careers. Such injuries occur when workers slip and fall, get hit by falling objects, have to squeeze themselves into tight spaces or handle sharp objects in a hurry. Here are some tips for preventing cuts and bruises at work:

  • Wear the right clothing
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands
  • Wear closed shoes to protect your feet
  • Be careful with stacked boxes or shelves

These are just three examples of common injuries that retail salespeople experience; hopefully, you won't experience any of them while at work. If you do get injured, however, don't forget that you are entitled to workers' compensation benefits for your injuries. Remember also that you will be required to prove that you were injured at work to receive the benefits.
